Class Description:

Since 1977, Tilopa Tai Chi Qigong Center has dedicated its work to improving understanding and health benefits from Tai Chi and Qigong.

In this system of Tai Chi which stems from the Chen Family Lineage, students train in the Internal Qigong aspects of each posture of Tai  Chi. We will work with proper breathing techniques for actualizing this flow of Qi Vitality and calming the mind, helping to restore an internal  balance to the body/mind system if practiced regularly.

As a moving meditation, students focus on how to center and align the physical, emotional, and mental self and attune to their subtle center throughout the day. You will also be introduced to additional Qigong Postures to strengthen the Internal Organs and cleanse the body systems.
Each person receives individual support and inner directives to best learn this internal process in a small group format.

Wash the Dishes

A novice monk approached the teacher and said, "Please teach me the way of Tao." The teacher asked, ”Have you eaten?"
The novice replied, 'Yes."
The teacher said, "Then, wash the dishes.”
This is a famous dialogue. After eating, it is only natural to wash the dishes and clean up. This way of naturalness is in accord with the way of Tai Chi. My Grand Master always encouraged us to selflessly serve.  When help is needed, go and help naturally - without a sense of obligation or duty. Giver and receiver are both forgotten.
Clouds appear and disappear in the sky according to causes and conditions. Water flows from higher to lower. Man is part of nature. Why don’t we live naturally?  When our ego appears, there is so much artificiality and pretension.
Life is sometimes hard - very hard. But life must be lived. It cannot be escaped. We get sick. We become helpless. That is life. We can choose to face reality squarely and not be defeated or become arrogant. When it is hard, endure. Help others and allow yourself to Be Helped. This is the natural way.
When we do things, however small, we should do it with our whole attention.  We do not make many mistakes in the big things of life. We make mistakes in the little things.
Life, after all, is "little things” strung together, like a tai chi form. “Within you, there is a stillness and a sanctuary to which you can retreat at any time and be yourself.” ~Hermann Hesse. Living in this way, one’s life will become a life without regret.
To wash your dishes after you have eaten is a common, natural thing. Live like the water – that flows like the rivers, strong yet soft and yielding, and merges into the ocean.
Doing everything sincerely and completely - our life becomes balanced and harmonious. Without any comparisons, each one begins to live their own true life. This is what the teacher meant when he said,
“After eating, wash the dishes." _ transcribed and edited by Marilyn Allysum

Tai Chi Qigong Practice

Refinement of the Art and Practice of Tai Chi Qigong
By Marilyn Allysum

Tai Chi Qigong practice is like finely tuning
an instrument to play a melodious sonata.
We must artfully refine and acutely listen
with rapt attention to the subtleties of
our movement and breath.
With the alignment of our crown point to
heaven and base of torso threading
this line to earth, we are positioned like
a carpenter's leveler, then the “water bubble”
becomes still and reflective; our inner lake serene,
nothing from the outside world disturbs this equipoise.
The true art of Qigong is a constant source of
new depths to its practitioners, as we become
restored and are then able to store elixir drops of its vastness.
The supply is inexhaustible,
the flavor like nectar to those who know.

Many times I see friends and practitioners in my travels,
practicing their Qigong with devotion.
The technique could provide greater benefit if
a few reminders are put into practice.
Since we are working with current (Qi) that as it's nature
does not have cessation, then in order to work best with it,
we must give it room to flow,
room to expand, and room to return or "circle" back to us.
When we enter a Qigong posture,
remember to keep your spirit bright and smile
with your conscious self into
each moment of your Qigong practice!
Arms that go out too far,
weight shifts that uproot the balance points,
heads and torsos that leave the natural line of
heaven and earth should be avoided,
as these movements take us out of the orbit of the Qi.
It is like listening to a beautiful musical composition
and suddenly one instrument plays too strongly,
disrupting the delicate balance of the music we are receiving.
So, the ability to grow in our awareness and expand
our consciousness is a delicate matter,
and these little things are a definite help on the way!

With all best wishes,
Marilyn Allysum
